EMPORIA — Rain chased Allen County Community College’s Red Devils and the Kansas City, Kan., Blue Devils all the way to Emporia State University on Sunday.
Saturday’s rain washed out a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader between the two teams. It is slated for today at 3 o’clock at ACCC’s Red Devil Field.
So the two teams played the other doubleheader at ESU on Sunday with ACCC still hosting. It didn’t help the Red Devils.
They had seven extra-base hits, including two home runs, but lost 13-9 in the first game. Kansas City scored eight runs in the fourth to break open a 5-4 game.
The Red Devils got a solo home run in the first from Michael Schell. In the third inning, Bryce Williams tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Curtiss Bunch. Brayden Brumley, who was 3-for-4 in the game, hit a solo home run.
But KCK’s eight-run outburst in the fifth was highlighted by two solo home runs and a three-run homer.
Allen County scored four more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. Dylan Bowman went 3 1/3 innings on the mound for ACCC, giving up 12 runs on 10 hits and four walks. Zak Mickens worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.
Brumley added a double and a triple to his home run. Riley Price had two singles and a double as Schell had a single and a home run.
Williams had a triple and a single while Brad Alberts hit a double and a single. Bunch, Nick Fountain and Travis Stafford each had a single.
Fountain not only pitched 4 2/3 innings in the second game, but was 3-for-5 at the plate. He had a two-run home run in the fifth plus two singles.
Stafford had two doubles. Bunch had a single and a double. Williams and Brumley had two singles each. Schell and Price had a single each.
The Red Devils were up 5-3 through six innings of the nine-inning game. Kansas City scored three runs in the seventh and five in the eighth on its way to a 12-5 win.
Brandon Spear and Eric Seymour pitched following Fountain.
ACCC is 2-8 in conference and 6-12 overall.
