LA CYGNE — Prairie View brought its older players to defeat the Iola High junior varsity Mustangs, 34-0, Monday afternoon.
“In the JV game, it looked like (Prairie View) played only juniors and sophomores,” coach Dana Daugharthy said. “Their freshmen didn’t even suit up. I think we have two or three sophomores and juniors on the offensive line and the rest are freshmen.”
Ben Cooper was 2-for-5 throwing for 18 yards and an interception. Evan Sigg threw one pass for an interception. Joey Zimmerman caught both of Cooper’s passes.
The team had 98 yards total, 80 of which were on the ground. The longest carry went for seven yards by Caleb Alexander. He had six rushes for 24 yards. Ethan Scheibmeier rushed for 35 yards on 14 attempts.
Jake Gumfory had five yards on two carries. Sigg ran the ball for six yards on five carries. Zimmerman ran the ball for 10 yards on four rushes.
“When varsity is young, they pull up people from JV,” Daugharthy said. “We suffer a little, but that’s just what happens.”
Daugharthy said the freshmen, who played a game after the JV game ended, played well.
The team improved to 2-0 on the season, beating Prairie View 20-7.
Overall, the team had 268 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers.
Sigg threw only two passes, both to Ethan Holloway. The first went for a 54-yard touchdown. The other pass went for a 19-yard completion.
Running the ball netted the Mustangs 195 yards. Nik Peterson led the way with 116 yards on 13 carries, which included a 39-yard run and 22-yard run. Cale Barnhart ran for 31 yards on five attempts. Sigg ran for 49 yards on eight carries.
The JV and freshman teams host Labette County at 4:30 p.m. next Monday.
