Iola High’s junior varsity golf team coped with a ferocious north wind Tuesday to launch the 2024 season.

The Mustangs were the host school at the Iola Invitational at Allen County Country Club, and finished fifth as a team.

Iola’s team score of 258 was two strokes behind runner-up Prairie View. Osawatomie claimed the team title at 209 strokes.

Indiviudually, Iola sophomore Briley Prather carded a 62 over nine holes, placing her 10th. Sophomore Parker Andres and freshman Evan Lacrone each scored a 64, followed by Alston Nelson at 68, junior Madeleine Wanker at 77, freshman Ben Fager at 79 and senior Keira Fawson, 85.

Iola head coach Jeremy Sellman praised his team’s effort, despite its limited experience and the cold, windy day.

“Briley played very well and stayed calm,” Sellman said. “We still have a lot of growth to accomplish but the potential is there for sure.  We have set some personal and team goals for this season with this group and we are on our way to reach them.”

The Mustang varsity squad tees off for the first time Tuesday at Independence.
