Justin Jay,  Humboldt, took first place in the 130-pound weight class division of the Kansas Open USA Powerlifting Meet on Dec. 5 in Wichita.
The 19-year-old Humboldt High graduate earned personal records in the meet’s three primary categories: deadlift (352.7 pounds), squat (264.6 pounds) and bench press (203.9 pounds).
“The work you put in is the work you put out,” said Jay, who received a trophy for his efforts in the annual state meet.
Jay has been weightlifting for three years and training at Cedar Brook Golf and Fitness in Iola for the past year.
With the next major meet not taking place until June, Jay said he has plenty of time to continue training and improving his personal record.
