WESTPHALIA – Marmaton Valley Junior High’s girls notched a 34-27 road win over Westphalia Thursday. The Wildcat boys dropped a 50-21 decision.
In the girls’ A-team game, Marmaton Valley rolled to a 22-14 halftime lead. The Wildcats maintained their advantage in the second half.
“We put Ruby Mann on one of their high-point players and Ruby was able to keep her contained to only two points from the outside,” said Brenda Mills, MVJH girls’ head coach. “Mackinzie Tynon showed good leadership, keeping our team focused throughout the game on playing well at both ends of the court.”
Tynon fired in 13 points and Lindsey McNeil added 11 for the Wildcat girls. Kyla Drake had eight points and Misty Storrer scored two.
In a two-quarter B-team game, Marmaton Valley won 6-4. Drake led the way with four points and Storrer scored two.
Marmaton Valley’s boys hung with Westphalia through the first quarter, trailing 9-4. Westphalia dominated the next two quarters of play – 17-7 and 19-5 – on their way victory.
“They were a physical team that exploited their speed against us. Their outside shooting and rebounding were large contributors to their victory,” said Arlyn Briggs, MVJH boys’ head coach, on the Westphalia team.
Brady Newman paced the Wildcats with 16 points. Keagan Boyd scored three and Gage Adams had two.
In the two-quarter B-team game, Westphalia won 24-11. Marmaton Valley got four points from Cody Wilson and three from Chad Starliper. Tony Jefferis and Dane Myers each had two points.
