COLONY — Crest High’s boys struggled on offense at the start and at the end of their contest Friday evening.
The Lancers recovered well enough from their dismal start — they trailed visiting Hartford High 13-5 after the first quarter — but could not overcome their struggles at the end.
Hartford kept up its offense down the stretch to beat Crest 51-42.
The loss drops Crest’s record on the season to 11-6.
“It was a rough game — very inconsistent,” Crest head coach Travis Hermreck said. “The bottom line was we self-destructed in the fourth quarter.”
Crest rebounded after its sluggish start to outscore Hartford 20-9 in the second period and lead 25-22 at the break.
“They shot the ball well, and we were careless at times,” Hermreck said.
Hartford outscored the Wildcats 19-12 in the third quarter to secure a 41-37 lead.
“We were within three points with 28 seconds left,” Hermreck said. “That should tell you how close the game was.”
But Crest could not get its offense back in gear down the stretch. Hartford ended the game with a 10-5 run.
The balanced scoring attack for Hartford was enough to counter-balance the Lancers’ one-two punch of Kyle Hammond and Jordan Morton, who combined to score 31 of the 42 Lancer points. Hammond scored 17 and Morton 14.
Meanwhile, four Jaguars reached double figures, with Mike Wilson scoring 13, Heath Kraft 12, Colten Barrett with 11 and Matt Troyer with 10.
Crest resumes play at home Monday against Chetopa.
