CHANUTE — Hallie Wolf and Jasmine Bannister won their play-in matches as Iola High’s No. 2 and No. 1 singles players, respectively, Saturday.
Wolf finished seventh in the No. 2 singles division of the 2010 Southeast Kansas League tennis tournament. The Iola senior defeated Ashley Simpson of Columbus 8-2 to get into the tournament.
After Wolf lost 8-1 to Lexi Dent of Independence and 8-2 to Carlyn Ward of Chanute, she won again. She beat Callie Mcaskill of Coffeyville 8-3.
Bannister, also a senior, got past Jordan Hayes of Coffeyville 8-5 in the play-in match. Then she lost three straight in the No. 1 singles division.
Bannster lost 8-1 to Sarah Ong of Parsons, 8-2 to Czarina Ramos of Chanute and 8-6 to Taylor Bailey of Fort Scott.
Iola seniors Dannette Newland and Autumn Snesrud were 0-3 in No. 1 doubles. They lost to Independence’s Carr and McGrath 8-0, Chanute’s Wendt and Gardner 8-1 and Coffeyville’s Gillman and Smith 8-6.
Iola’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Nina Froggatte and junior Audrey Payne dropped three straight 8-1 decisions. The loss to Independence’s Mangan and Mangan, Labette County’s Nance and Eckelberry and Coffeyville’s Abudu and Manley.
The Fillies get ready for Kansas Class 4A regional play Friday and Saturday at Parsons. The top six singles players and top six doubles teams advance to state.
