Iola’s Toland wins No. 1 singles

COFFEYVILLE — Iola High’s Kent Toland stayed perfect for the season. Toland went 4-0 in No. 1 singles competition at Coffeyville’s five-team tennis meet Thursday.
Toland netted 8-0 wins over Michael Griffin, Pittsburg, and Braiden Peterson of Columbus. He beat Max Manley, Coffeyville, 8-4 and Matt Stutt, Chanute, 8-5.
Michael Middleton was 3-1 in No. 2 singles for the Mustangs. He opened with an 8-3 win over Jake Cloninger, Pittsburg.
Middleton went to a tiebreaker, winning 7-3, to post an 8-7 win over Brad Eastman of Coffeyville. He dropped an 8-1 decision to Chanute’s Derick Manly. Middleton finished with an 8-1 victory over Blake Mackenson, Columbus.
In No. 1 doubles, Iola’s Chase Vaughn and Alec Peterson went 1-3. Their win was an 8-5 decision over Yo Lee and Nick Holman of Columbus.
Vaughn and Peterson lost 8-5 to Clay Southern and Josh Reed of Pittsburg, 8-0 to Zac Mitchell and Taylor Eastman of Coffeyville and 8-2 to Jacob Guiot and Mason Johnson of Chanute.
Zeph Larney and Garrett Catron played No. 2 doubles for Iola and were 1-3. They pulled out an 8-6 win over Thomas Niegisch and Cody Spainhower.
Larney and Catron dropped dropped 8-0 decisions to Pittsburg’s Austin York and Ryan Hall, to Coffeyville’s Quinton Hershey and Josh Mitchell and to Chanute’s Jacob Guiot and Mason Johnson.
“Both doubles teams continue to improve. We still need to work on serves, placement of shots and volleys,” said Lyle Kern, Mustang head coach.
Iola tied Coffeyville for second place in the meet.
Iola goes to Pittsburg this coming Thursday.
