SALINA  — Iola freshman Trent Jones got his first taste of the Kansas Class 4A State Tournament on Friday and after experiencing a little of the good and a little of the bad, he punched his ticket to the second day of the tournament.

Jones was the lone representative for the Mustangs in Salina after finishing fourth in the 4A regional tournament in Chanute last weekend.

The 145-pound freshman started the day going up against Marysville junior Joey Bockin who came into the match with a 32-12 record.

Jones allowed only a single point but was unable to get a score past Bockin. He lost 1-0 and dropped into the consolation rounds.

Jones then ran up against Eudora sophomore Holden Andrews where scoring proved not to be an issue. Jones fought his way to a 7-0 win, moving him into the consolation quarterfinals.

Jones has a tough task ahead of him if he wants to advance any further. He will start the second day of the tournament versus Buhler senior Nick Elliot who comes in with a 36-10 overall record. If Jones can get the win, then he’s just a win away from a top-six finish at his first-ever state tournament.
