Invariably, when Iola High’s Landon Carson and Becca Sprague drew the focus of opposing defenses each time they stepped on the basketball court this season.
That each still managed to perform as well as they did is why both have earned postseason honors for their hardwood prowess.
Carson, a senior, was named to the first team all-Pioneer League squad for his work with the Mustangs.
Carson averaged 18.5 points and 4.2 rebounds a game, and scored in excess of 20 points 11 times. He also topped the 30-point barrier twice, including a season-high 33 against Osage City Dec. 12.
Carson led the Mustangs to a 14-8 mark on the season, the most wins for an Iola squad since 2002, and a berth in the Class 4A Substate Championship game.
As an aside, the team that knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs, Louisburg, is vying for a state championship this afternoon against Bishop Miege.
THE WINS were a bit more scarce for the Fillies, who reached the victory column only once this season.
Nevertheless, Sprague’s inside presence was a constant highlight for Iola as they usually went around, through and over opponents to get her points.
Sprague averaged 8.3 points per game, and reached double figures eight times. Her season high was Jan. 26 when whe scored 15 against West Franklin.
Sprague’s performance netted here second-team honors with the Pioneer League.
