OSAWATOMIE — Iola High’s junior varsity football team earned its first win of the season with a 38-30 shootout Monday against Osawatomie.
“We had a lot of people play very, very well, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” coach Dana Daugharthy said. “A lot of our backs carried the ball really well, the line blocked very well. We pretty much did whatever we wanted on offense. On defense, we let them do whatever they wanted. So, we’ve got some work to do there.”
The Mustangs ran the ball for 377 rush yards. Isaac Vink did the most damage on the ground with 139 yards, including a 24-yard rushing touchdown. Nik Peterson was close with 137 rushing yards, including 51-yard and 5-yard touchdown runs. Caleb Alexander ran for 42 yards and had a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Evan Sigg rushed for 16 yards and a 6-yard touchdown. Joey Zimmerman had 36 rushing yards and Ben Cooper had seven rushing yards.
Cooper was 1-for-4 passing, completing a 12-yard pass to Ethan Holloway.
This was the first win of the year for Iola, which is now 1-3. The team hosts Central Heights at 4:30 p.m. next Monday.
“Isaac Vink and Nik Peterson both carried the ball very well,” Daugharthy said. “We were able to work both sides of the field all day with the sweep. They ran hard and grinded it out.”
