Led by their lone senior, the Mustangs opened up their season at the KanOkla wrestling tournament at Caney Valley on Saturday.
That senior, 170-pound Elijah Luedke, ended the day with a 3-1 record and a third-place finish.
After a first-round bye, Luedke pinned Labettes Logan Simmons before falling to Bartlesville, Okla.s Laken Clowdus who won in a 5-3 decision.
After the loss, Luedke went on to beat Wellingtons Batri Taylor by tech fall before getting a win over Coffeyvilles Jaden Erne in the third-place match with a 4:12 pin.
Following Luedke were fourth-place finishes by two Mustang freshmen Trent Jones (2-2) and Adam Atwell (2-3).
Jones, wrestling in the 145-pound division, made it all of the way to the third-place match but fell in a 2-0 decision to Shawnee Heights Caden Walker.
The 138-pound Atwell struggled at the start of the day, losing his first three matches by pin but he was able to pin Cherryvales Cameron Cannon and Eries Grant Taylor to earn his fourth-place finish.
The other freshmen competing in varsity, TJ Taylor, ended the day in sixth with a 1-3 record.
After beating Pawhuska, Okla.s Lane Cosby in a 7-3 decision in the second consolation round, Taylor lost in the last two round including a 6-1 loss by decision in the 106-pound fifth-place match to Jayhawk-Linns Corbin White to close out the day.
152-pound junior Casen Barker was the final varsity wrestler for the Mustangs and he wrapped up the day with an eighth-place finish and a 2-2 record.
After dropping his opening match to Uniontowns Colt Eck by pin, Barker got wins over Caney Valleys Dakota Rose and Fredonias Bo Tindle which put Barker in the seventh-place match.
Independences Ian Lawson pinned Barker in 1:57 to take the seventh-place finish leaving Barker with eighth.
The Mustangs also took three wrestlers to compete in the JV/girls division.
Freshman Trenton Varney took first in the 141-147 class with a 2-1 record. He beat Labettes Braden Barragar by fall and Bartlesville, Okla.s Asheton Becker by decision before falling to Coffeyvilles Kyle Miller by decision in the third and final round.
Navaeh Cuellar also finished first in the 104-114 pound division after beating Pittsburgs Rebeccah Jones and Cherryvales Alyssa Boswell to go 2-0.
CJ Shields finished third with a 1-2 record. He pinned Labettes Ryan Kasson in 1:00 for his lone win.
