Iola wins Independence Invitational

The Iola Mustangs had a nearly flawless day while taking the Independence High School Tennis Invitational Monday.

INDEPENDENCE — The Iola High tennis team  racked up a few wins Monday while taking first at the Independence Invitational.

Featuring Neodesha, Parsons and a pair of split squads of Independence players, the Mustangs took the overall title, buoyed by No. 1 singles winner freshman Mosiah Fawson and Iola’s No. 1 doubles pairing Ethan Riebel and Brody Thompson.

Fawson opened the Invite with an 8-1 victory over David Mitchel of Independence Orange, then defeated Parsons’s Kai Gregory 8-1 in round two. In round three, he defeated Landon Howell 8-3 and wrapped up the day with an 8-1 victory over Independence Black’s Draven Anderson.

In No. 2 singles, junior Trapper Boren took second with an 8-1 victory over Nolan Carnes of Independence Orange before falling to Parsons’s Alex Hicks 8-4 in round two. In round three, he defeated J’Vonte White 8-4 and wrapped up the day with an 8-1 victory over Independence Black’s Logan Vail, who plays for Neodesha but became a Pirate to fill the Black team’s roster.

In doubles action, cousins Riebel and Thompson opened the day with an 8-5 loss to the Independence Orange pairing of Logan Peschka and Brodie Small. They rebounded with a victory over Parsons’s Giovanni Sanchez and Landon Swaffard in straight sets. The Iola duo defeated Neodesha’s Lualon Roebuck and Alex Marroquin 8-5, and then wrapped up the day with a 8-3 victory over Independence Black’s JD Woodburn and Brody Cooley.

No. 2 doubles Donovan Nee and Simon Mueller opened the day with a trio of losses, 8-5, 8-4 and 8-1, but got in the win column with an 8-3 victory over Avry Brockway and Jack McAfee of Independence black to wrap up the day.
