Iola track took a small squad of six athletes to Paola on Thursday due to a JV meet in Chanute on Monday that many of the younger athletes attended.

Jack Adams and Mat Karr both walked away with great results while senior Kassy Shelby put up a season-best in the 400-meter dash.

Adams ran both the 1600 and 3200 because the 4×800 team did not compete. Adams started with the 1600 and finished fifth with a time of 5:02, missing out on fourth place by less than a second.

He did even better in the 3200 where he ran a personal best time of 10:38.45 which was good enough for fourth. He missed out of third by .3 seconds. That time beat his previous 3200 time from last week by 22 seconds.

Karr placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 121’8”. He threw for over 130 feet, which would have been the top mark at the meet, but it went out of bounds.

Meanwhile, Shelby took fifth in the 400 with a season-best time of 1:07.56. She missed out on a top-four finish by .3 seconds while running against some of the state’s best sprinters including the defending 400 state champion in Class 3A.

Elysia Kunkler had a OK day by her standards, which included winning the long jump with a season-best distance of 17’6.5” and finishing third in the high hurdles with a time of 16.7 seconds.

She also finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.72.

Cole Regehr ran the 1600 and 800 which led him to place seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:16.94.

Last but not least was Tavon Bass. Bass normally runs in the 4×800 but instead took on the 400 and 800. He didn’t place but he did run similar times to what he ran at the last meet despite have limited rest time between events.

The Mustangs and Fillies will either compete at Anderson County on Thursday or head to Wichita to compete in the Pre-State Challenge at Cessna Stadium on Thursday and Friday.
