PITTSBURG — A little wind did little to knock Riccardo Barbarossa off his game Thursday.
The foreign exchange student in his junior year at Iola High School, blew past his competition Thursday at the Pittsburg Invitational Tennis Meet.
Barbarossa won all four of his matches to earn the gold medal in the No. 1 singles division.
“It was a very windy day for tennis, but everyone played well and had a good time,” Mustang head coach Chris Belknap said.
Junior Sam Fager continues to progress as a singles player after starting the year as part of a doubles team. He went 0-4, but that mark belied the competitive nature of the matches, Belknap said.
Fager had multiple games go down to the wire before falling short.
Landon Carson and Patrick Weaver went 1-3 on the day and have learned a thing or two about tennis court etiquette.
“This duo tells me that they feel out of their element, unable to trash talk (get in opponents head during play) like they can in other sports,” Belknap noted.
Iola will hit the courts again today in Pittsburg.
