Iola tennis opens season with success

INDEPENDENCE — It was a promising start to Iola High’s boys tennis season on Tuesday.
Colby Works, Iola’s no. 1 singles player, went  3-1 overall. Works beat Fort Scott’s Alex Gamble 8-4, Chanute’s Zane Wyrick 8-0 and Indy’s Dmitri McCaffery 8-4. His only loss came to Pittsburg’s Logan Benham, who went undefeated.
No. 2 singles player Connor Farrell lost his matches, but coach Dan Berg said he worked well and stayed in many of the sets.
The doubles pairing of Mason Key and Isaiah Fawson went 2-2. They beat Fort Scott 8-1 and Chanute 8-5.
Rhett Allen and Glenn Thomas also went 2-2. This was Thomas’s first tournament. Coach Berg was happy that Thomas and Allen were able to work well together. They beat Fort Scott 8-5 and Chanute 8-4.
The team will host Columbus, Parsons and Independence today at 3 p.m. They will also attend a tournament in Independence this Saturday.
