Iola tennis traveled to Chanute on Thursday and the Mustangs’ lack of numbers and some bad luck left them last out of eight teams.

Senior number one singles player Jon Miller was the source of most of the bad luck. Miller went 1-2 in his three matches with the two losses coming in the tie-break round.

In the opening match, Miller faced Luke Falkenstein of Labette County and lost 8-7 in six tie-break points. Miller then easily took down Columbus’ Tucker Peine 8-2 before facing Jayden Royal-Bey for fifth-place.

Miller lost in five tie-break points which gave him sixth-overall.

Junior Elijah Fawson had the best performance out of any of the Mustangs, finishing third overall in the number two singles spot with a 2-1 record.

Fawson beat Labette’s Lane Farrow 8-3 in the opening round before falling 8-4 to Columbus’ Preston Mullere. Fawson then faced El Dorado’s Ryan Hus for third and won 8-3.

Eason Cheung and Adyran Nading moved up to the top doubles spot with the normal number one doubles partners Fawson and senior Bret Plumlee unavailable. They struggled down the stretch, going 1-2 including an 8-1 loss to Paola, an 8-0 win over Columbus and an 8-6 loss to Labette in the fifth-place game.

The Mustangs will travel to Independence on Tuesday before hosting a dual with Columbus on Thursday.
