After multiple false starts and postponements due to bad weather, Iola finally managed to get a home track meet in before the end of the 2019 season.

And while it wasn’t a full varsity meet, the Mustangs and Fillies came to show any home spectators a good time as both teams took first overall.

The Fillies had numerous first-place finishes including a top finish by Ella Taylor in the pole vault with a personal best height of 9’0”. Taylor also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 30’9” which was a personal best by an inch and second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 56.43 which was also a personal best by more than a second.

Christine Helman continued to succeed in the throwing events after a first-place finish in the discus with a personal best throw of 104’8” followed by a first-place finish in the shot put with another personal best distance of 31’9”. Helman took third in the javelin with a throw of 81’0”.

Josie Plumlee took first in the 1600 with a personal best time of 6:11.7 and Rachel Bycroft took first in the 3200 with a time of 13:40.34.

Elysia Kunkler won both the 100-meter hurdles (17.3) and the long jump (17’3”) but since she’s such an established varsity performer, they chose to give the gold to the next best jumper.

The 4×100 team of Kassy Shelby, Ella Taylor, Elanie Sturgeon and Kunkler took first with a time of 53.3 which was a season-best. Head coach Dana Daugharthy commented that a time that low will really help the Fillies be competitive at league and at regionals.

The 4×400 team of Shelby, Taelyn Maley, Elanie Sturgeon and Ashtyn Aikins-Ansley took first with a time of 4:48.4 which was a season-best.

Callie Murcko took second in the pole vault with a height of 6’6” and Averie Sharon took second in the 3200 with a time of 13:47.0.

Shelby took third in the 400 with a time of 1:10.13 and Aikins-Ansley took third in the 200 (30.86).

The Iola boys were equally successful.

Kobe Lord had a huge day, taking first in three different events. He won the 100 with a time of 11.8, the 200 with a personal best time of 23.95 and the long jump with a distance of 20’2.5”.

Jack Adams took first in the 1600 with a personal best time of 4:53.7 and the 3200 with a time of 10:51.0.

Matt Karr took first in the discus with a throw of 117’8” and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 40’10”.

Karr took second in the shot because Logan Brown took first with a personal best throw of 43’0”. He also took third in the discus (112’2.5”).

The 4×800 team of Tavon Bass, Landon Carson, Damien Dryden and Ashten Olsten took first with a time of 9:52.50.
