PARSONS — Staying in the running for the 2012 Southeast Kansas League championship, Iola High’s Mustangs picked up two run-rule victories over Parsons High’s Vikings Friday.
The Mustangs won 11-0 in five innings and 14-3 in six innings. The sweep put the Mustangs at 8-4 in SEK play and 11-5 overall.
Iola is slated to host Fort Scott today in its final SEK doubleheader. The Mustangs are not scheduled to make up a league twin bill with last-place Columbus.
Going into this week’s league play, Independence is atop the SEK at 10-4 and 11-5 followed by Iola and Pittsburg (8-4, 9-5). Chanute is 8-5 and 8-9 and Fort Scott sits at 7-5 and 8-8.
Jerrik Sigg and Clint Heffern pitched in the opener Friday. Jarred Latta led the offense with two singles and a double.
Drew Walden hit a double and a triple and C. Heffern had a single and a double. Mason Coons and Braden Larson each doubled. Derrick Weir singled.
Jarred Latta, Coons and Aaron Barclay managed the pitching duties in the second game.
Levi Ashmore, Sigg and Coons each had three singles. Walden cranked out two doubles and a single. Weir hit a single and a double. Larson had two singles. J. Latta doubled. C. Heffern singled.
