Iola soccer team wins league title

Iola Blue and Gold, a 14-and-under traveling youth soccer team, finished in a tie for the 2012 SEK Recreational Soccer League championship. The Iola team has been the SEK U-14 champion two years in a row.

Iola ended the league season with a 1-1 tie against Independence, which forged the tie at the top of the league standings. The league standings are determined by a point system and there are no tiebreakers.

Iola was 5-1-1 on the season.

Devan Herfurth scored Iola’s goal against Independence last Sunday. Mason Key had 16 saves on the day.

Iola Blue and Gold is finishing its season at a tournament in Leawood this weekend. They open play today at 1 p.m. at Leawood Park.
