COUNCIL GROVE — The Iola High cross country team had their season come to an end at the Class 3A regional meet in Council Grove Saturday.

Iola’s boys team finished in 10th place.

Cole Moyer, a junior and the oldest of the Mustang runners, led the team with a 20th place finish in the boys 5,000-meter run after coming off a state appearance last year.

“I should have come more ready to compete. I knew it was going to be tough. It’s probably the best regional in 3A,” Moyer said. “But I want the team to keep it light now, get ready for track in the spring and stay conditioned.”

Keegan Hill placed 25th with a time of 19:05, Brennen Coffield placed 58th in 20:30, Caden Coltrane placed 70th, 21:25, Joshua Wanker, 77, 21:49 and Kaiden Vega, 78th, 22:02.

“Even for the faster people, I know this race was tough,” said Iola’s Vega. “The speed workouts, even though I hated them, were so important to being able to compete,” Vega said. “The competition was so stiff that it made me want to run faster. Keeping focused with a good mentality throughout the race was key.”

“When I started running this summer with Cole (Moyer) I couldn’t even run 2 miles without having to stop. Now I can run 3 miles straight,” said Vega. “I’ve got to give Cole credit because I wouldn’t even be doing this if it weren’t for him.”

THE IOLA GIRLS were led by Mahailie Genoble’s 38th place finish in 23:53 while Lynsie Fehr placed 43rd with a finish of 24:15.
