OSAWATOMIE — No, you’re not seeing double.
Just like their high school counterparts did Thursday evening, Iola Middle School’s Mustangs opened the 2021 football season with a 38-0 win over Osawatomie.
“It was a good win for our first game of the season,” IMS head coach Scott Ellis said. “The boys came out fired up and were aggressive from the start.”
There were several stars in the victory.
Noah Schowengerdt rushed six times for 60 yards, while Tre Wilson covered 42 yards on three carries, while scoring twice and pulling in 37 receiving yards. Hayden Kelly covered 36 yards on his only carry of the game, while Nick Bauer threw for 51 yards and two touchdowns.
Easton Weseloh covered 11 yards on two carries, and Henry White went 14 yards on two rushes.
Jakolby Hill had a 14-yard touchdown reception.
Wilson paced the defense with eight tackles, and Henry White had a pick-six to go with four tackles.
Others getting in on the tackling were Hill with six, Weseloh and Gannon Hutton with five apiece, Schowengerdt and Mathew Drago with three each, Brent Stevens with two and Maddox Riley, Jayden Beene and Kelly with one apiece.
“Tre Wilson played tough on both sides of the ball, hitting his holes on offense, and having the most tackles on defense,” Coach Ellis said. “Nick executed the offense well from rushing and passing plays.
“It was a group effort with several contributing on the scoreboard,” he continued. “I saw lots of good things to build on for our next game.”
The seventh-grade game was postponed.
