Iola High’s Mustangs finished ninth in Southeast Kansas League golf competition in 2011. League play concluded Monday at Chanute.
Then the Mustangs played two more times this week in non-league tournaments and finished the season strong. The Mustangs earned second-place medals in Tuesday’s Fort Scott High Invitational and third-place team medals in Thursday’s Parsons High Invitational.
The Mustangs compete in a Kansas Class 4A Regional Tournament Monday at Chanute.
At Fort Scott, freshman Weston Hines led the Mustangs with an 87 (46-41) earning the fifth-place individual medal. Kris Collins, a junior, claimed the sixth-place medal with an 88 (43-45).
Junior Nick Jacobs carded a 94 (45-49) tying for 12th. Junior Doug Stewart (48-47) and senior Sam Shallah (46-49) both shot 95s tying for 14th. Sophomore Hayden Wolf finished at 101 (53-48) ending in a tie for 16th.
Fort Scott won the tournament with a 338. Iola combined for a 364 and Independence was third at 376.
In Thursday’s tournament at Parsons, SEK champion Pittsburg won the tournament with a team score of 334. Parsons took second with a 346 and the Mustangs combined for a 349.
Jacobs was the top golfer of the day for the Mustangs. His 85 (42-44) earned him eighth place. Junior Zach Crawford claimed the 10th-place medal with an 86 (42-44).
Collins (44-45) and Stewart (46-43) ended up with 89s for the 18-hole event. Junior Jarrett Mosbrucker shot a 94 (50-44) and junior Rocky Smith had a 99 (49-50).
SEK golf
Scores for teams and individual golfers from four designated golf tournaments each season are added together for SEK standings.
The Mustangs ended up with a team score of 1,536. Pittsburg won the team championship with 1,332 and Independence was second at 1,335. Fort Scott was eighth at 1,518.
The top 10 individuals receive first-team SEK honors and golfers 11-20 receive league honorable mention.
Iola had two golfers in the top 40. Zach Crawford finished 33rd with a season total of 382 for the four tournaments. Jarrett Mosbrucker was 35th at 395. Both are juniors.
Jon Nichols of Pittsburg captured the SEK individual championship with a final of 300. Peyton Botts of Independence was second with a 319.
