Iola Kids Wrestling Club wrapped up the 2018-19 season over the week by competing in the USAWKS 2019 State Folkstyle Championship in Topeka.
They left the capital city with a state champion and multiple podium finishes.
Zoie Hesse went 2-0, knocking off Eurekas Raylee Boles and Hutchinsons Macey Parks to take first overall in the 10 and under girls, 105-112 division.
The club celebrated the championship Sunday night with a celebratory lap around the square led by two police cars, an ambulance and a fire truck all blaring their sirens and flashing their lights while Hesse peeked out the sunroof of a car to wave to those who gathered to congratulate her.
Also competing for championships on Sunday were high schoolers Trent Jones and T.J. Taylor who are currently freshmen at Iola High School.
Both were undefeated heading into the championship match but Taylor fell to Maizes Colin Bybee by a 10-1 major decision while Jones lost a 3-1 nailbiter to Bourbon Countys Jacob Stinnett. Stinnett is a freshman at Fort Scott.
In addition to those finishes, Isaiah Trester finished fourth in the 10 and under 190-pound division, Olivia Matthews placed sixth in the eight and under girls division and Danny Boeken placed sixth in the 12 and under 190-pound division.
