Iola JV track teams compete at Chanute

CHANUTE — Field events fueled Iola High’s Mustang junior varsity to a team title. Iola High’s Fillies found the speed on track to claim the runner-up trophy in their division of Monday’s Chanute High Junior Varsity Invitational track meet.

The meet was cut short with a few races remaining because of severe weather.

The Mustangs piled up 117 points for the team championship with Chanute in second with 84 points followed by Labette County with 82 points. Oklahoma Union High School was fourth with 58 points.

Michael Wilson and Justin Baker went 1-2 in the pole vault. Wilson won the event with a vault of 11 feet. Baker was second at 9 feet, 6 inches. Mustang teammate Terrell Smith placed fourth at 8 feet.

Tyler McIntosh took the gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 37’10” and earned the silver in the long jump at 17’1”. 

Stephen McDonald was the gold medalist in the discus with a throw of 117’3” and he was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 36’8”.

The Mustangs gathered in medals on the track also. Fryendz Wallace earned gold in the 400-meter dash in 56.3 seconds and McIntosh was second in 56.6 seconds.

Iola’s 4×100-meter relay team of Devon Burton, Wilson, Smith and J. Baker won the gold in 49.1 seconds.  Burton was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.1 seconds.

Jeremy Spears placed second in the 1600-meter run in 5 minutes, 5 seconds. Garrett Prall was the bronze medalist in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 49.2 seconds.

Jacob Cooper placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:26.8. Iola had two 4×800-meter relay teams in the race. The team of Cooper, Jason Tidd, Blaine Klubek and Bryan Miller placed fourth in 9:59 followed by the foursome of Tyler Holloway, Arion Kunkler, Jonathan Tidd and Bryan Mueller in fifth at 10:51.

Chanute won the girls’ division with 127 points. Iola was second with 60 points.

Emma Piazza led the Fillies with two gold medals and a silver medal. Piazza won the 200-meter dash in 28.5 seconds. Addie Haar was the gold medalist in the 400-meter dash in 1:08.3.

Piazza and Haar combined with Emery Driskel and Shannon Vogel for the gold in the 4×100-meter relay race in 56.4 seconds. Piazza finished second in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet.

Darci Collins earned the gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 32’4”. 

Driskel won the bronze medal in the 100-meter dash in 14.4 seconds. Jo Lohman, Vogel, Brianne Jett and Courtney Smith combined for a bronze in the  4×800-meter relay race in 12:56.
