Iola JV meet provides opportunities

There were no pre-entry deadlines. There were no event entry limits.
“What is so fun about our junior varsity track meet is it allows schools to enter as many kids in events,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach. “We score eight places so there were a lot of athletes who scored points in a meet who normally don’t have that opportunity.”
At Monday’s Iola High JV Invitational, there was a mix of junior varsity athletes and varsity athletes. Smaller schools used the meet as either a regularly scheduled meet for their varsity plus junior varsity athletes or as a varsity make-up meet.
Iola, Anderson County, Labette County, Coffeyville, Chanute, Girard and Frontenac brought junior varsity athletes.
For example, there were six heats of the boys’ 100-meter dash while only one girl competed in the high jump.
Marmaton Valley High’s boys won the team title with 121 points. Iola High’s junior varsity boys were second with 111 points just ahead of Crest High’s varsity at 110. Humboldt  finished seventh with 44 points.
West Elk ran away in the girls’ division with 192.5 points. Crest was a distant second with 70 points. Marmaton Valley finished in sixth place with 35 points. Iola High’s junior varsity girls were tied for eighth with Chanute JV with 34 points and Humboldt was 10th with 27 points.
