Area track and field teams participated in the Marv Smith Invitational at Riverside Park Tuesday.
Chanute won first place as a team for both the boys and girls. The Iola boys took third place and the girls placed fifth. Humboldt finished fourth on both the boys and girls side. Marmaton Valley and Southern Coffey County each took sixth and seventh places in the boys and girls sides, respectively.

Iola’s Jesse Taylor won first place in the 3200-meter run while Maddox Riley earned first place in the 100-meter hurdles and the 4×800 relay race. Karingten Hall won first place in the 100-meter dash while Cole Moyer took second place in the 3200-meter run.
Taylor’s time in the 3200 meters was 10:56.49.
Riley had a personal-record time of 17.26 seconds for his first place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
The boys 4×800 meter relay team came in first place with a season-best time of 9:09.24. The team consisted of Eli Adams, Moyer, Taylor and Travis Wanker.
Gavin Jones took second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.75 seconds. He also snatched fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.50 seconds.
Moyer came in second place in the 3200 meter run with a season-best time of 11:23.44.
Adams took third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.06.
“This was maybe the race of the night. I knew it was going to be close between him and two Chanute runners,” said Daugharthy. “Eli led most of the race, but both Chanute runners beat him by a second. Eli was really frustrated by the result because he is a competitor. I know that this will drive him to try to beat them next week in Chanute.”
Justin McCullough earned third place in the discus with a season-best throw of 128 feet, 4 inches. He took fifth place in the shot put at 39’ 1” and earned a personal-record throw of 110’ 1” in the javelin.
“Justin had a good meet in the throws,” Daugharthy said. “The discus mark was one inch off of his all-time PR in the event and puts him to be very competitive in our league and regionals.”
Cortland Carson got fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.91 seconds.
“This was the first time this season that his time had not improved,” said Daugharthy. “However, he ran on the 4×400 last night to specifically try to improve his mark in this event. He runs the beginning of the race so well, but he is unable to keep it up for the entirety of the race. We are hoping the 400s will help him.”
