Iola High JV track athletes claim medals

FORT SCOTT — All in all, it was a pretty good day for Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs. The junior varsity athletes turned in some good times and marks at Tuesday’s Fort Scott High JV Invitational.

No team scores were kept at the meet. Marmaton Valley High and Uniontown High also had athletes competing in the meet.

For the Mustangs, there were four golds earned on the track and one in field events. Tyler Powelson won the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 58.1 seconds with Travis Hermstein placing fourth in the race in 5:31.5.

Powelson claimed another gold in the 800-meter run, winning in 2:13.1 followed by teammates Tyler McIntosh in second place in 2:17.8 and Jacob Cooper in third in 2:20.7.

McIntosh and Powelson combined with Terrill Smith and Fryendz Wallace to strike gold in the 4×400-meter relay race in 3:51.4. Devan Burton won the 100-meter dash in 11.9 seconds and Smith was sixth in the dash in 12.3 seconds.

Gold went to Stephen McDonald in the discus with a throw of 122 feet, 5 inches. McDonald finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 36’8”.

McIntosh picked up two silver medals in the jumping events, finishing second in the long jump at 19’5” and in the triple jump in 38’3”. Wallace ran second in the 400-meter dash in 56 seconds.

Copper, Jason Tidd, Bryan Miller and Jonathan Tidd combined to take second in the 4×800-meter relay race in 10:00.4. The 4×100-meter relay team of Burton, Wallace, Levi Baker and Smith finished third in 48.9 seconds.

Garrett Prall earned a bronze medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 49.1 seconds. Bryan Mueller placed fourth in the 3200-meter run in 13:13.9. Burton was fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.8 seconds. Smith placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”.

Iola’s No. 2 4×400-meter relay team of Cooper, Miller, Jason Tidd and Baker placed fifth in 4:10.1. Iola’s field-event relay (4×100) team of Tyler Holloway, Jonathan Tidd, Prall and McDonald took first in 53.9 seconds.

The Fillies’ Darci Collins claimed the gold in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet and she took fifth in the discus at 80’3”. Kyra Moore and Alexis Hobbs finished fifth and sixth in the javelin, respectively, with throws of 71’9” and 71’0”.

Emma Piazza won the 400-meter dash in 1:08.3. Emery Driskel took the gold medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 51.5 seconds and placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 14.1 seconds.

Driskel and Piazza combined with Jo Lohman and Addie Haar for the gold medal in the 4×400-meter relay in 4:45.5. Haar was the silver medalist in the 800-meter run in 2:40.3 and Lohman was third in 2:50.1.

The Fillies’ 4×100-meter relay team of Driskel, Piazza, Shannon Vogel and Haar took second in the 55.9 seconds. Vogel, Lauren Hunt, Lohman and Courtney Smith combined for third-place in the 4×800-meter relay race in 12:56.2.

Iola’s field event relay (4×100) team of Hobbs, Moore, Courtney Smith and Megan Smith finished second in 1:04.4.
