PITTSBURG — Iola High’s golfers picked up a pair of top-10 finishes on a blustery day at Crestwood Country Club Tuesday.
Iola’s Chris Holloway took sixth overall with his 91, while Xander Sellman took 10th at 96.
Titus Jones carded a 126, good for 38th.
“Chris is coming into his form from last season and made great improvements from last week,” Iola head coach Jeremy Sellman said. “His short game is getting on pace with where it should be at this part of the season and I expect to see him continue to improve every week.
“Mentally, this week was better for him as he accepted the conditions and that the course was not going to give many birdie chances. This is the toughest course we will play all season. The fairways were tight and the greens were punishing with tough pin locations.”
The elements also were a factor, Coach Sellman noted. The day started with calm conditions, but quickly turned windy and cool as the day progressed.
“Xander battled all day and pushed through a couple of mistakes that cost him several strokes,” Coach Sellman said. “His approach game was really good this week. It is nice to see that practice is paying off. He struggled on the green this week having several opportunities slip by him costing him a better finish in the tournament.
“Titus Jones put his head down and ground out a good finish,” Sellman continued. “For his first season golfing, he is doing remarkably well considering his limited experience in the game. He is the hardest worker on the team and it shows in his ability on the course. I’m proud of him and proud of the whole team.
“This week will be a lot of putting drills for the boys,” Sellman continued. “Like they say, drive for show, putt for dough.”
