INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s golf team battled cold, wet and especially windy conditions Thursday at the Independence Invitational.
Leading the Iola contingent was sophomore Xander Sellman, who carded an 88 to finish sixth overall.
First-year head coach (and Xander’s father) Jeremy Sellman spoke about his son’s ability to cope with the brutal conditions.
“I’m proud of his finish and his ability to manage the conditions and his game. Mentally, Xander just seemed to be relaxed all day. He played what the course presented, and stayed with his game plan.”
Xander’s strong putting was key as well, Coach Sellman noted.
Sophomore Chris Holloway was next, placing 16th with his score of 96.
“I’m proud of how Chris battled through the conditions and the toughness of the course,” Sellman said. “Chris is a little rusty with some aspects of his game, but he will quickly knock off that rust and be in contention for top-10 finishes again very soon.”
Sophomore Titus Jones, in his first ever varsity meet, tied for 51st with a score of 118.
“Titus exceeded my expectations and showed great promise,” Sellman said. “I know he is going to get better at each one.
“I’m pleased and excited with how the entire team played,” he continued. “We are a young team playing against teams with a lot of experience.”
Iola returns to competition Tuesday at the Pittsburg Invitational, hosted by Crestwood Country Club.
