The Iola High School girls hit the court for the first time in 2022, ending the holiday break. The girls struggled in a 73-16 loss. The Mustangs were never able to find a rhythm against the Panthers. The Mustangs waited six minutes to score their first points when Aysha Houk hit a 3-pointer, but by then, the score was already 24-3. The Panthers, thanks in part to a size advantage, controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Mustangs by a wide margin early and used those chances to create successful second-chance shots.Houk was the entire offense for the Mustangs early on, scoring eight points in the first half. At the half, Iola trailed 45-10. The second half went much like the first. Iola was limited on offense, scoring only two points in the third quarter as St. Mary’s pulled away. The Panthers shot the ball like pros, everything seemed to go in with ease as they controlled the court on both ends. The Panther defense silenced what offense Iola did muster in the first half by focusing on Houk. Tatum Boyd stepped up hitting a three midway through the fourth quarter as she tried to provide a spark for the Mustangs. Maci Miller stepped up to go 1-2 on free throws in the final quarter. The Mustangs were 5-9 from the free throw line against the Panthers. “I knew Colgan was going to be good,” said Iola head coach Kelsey Johnson. “I expected our girls to be a little more ready to go. We need to get back in the gym and back to work so we can improve before Friday’s game. We need to work on the basics and make sure our fundamentals are sound.” The JV girls lost 44-30. Reese Curry led the way with 12 points. Tatum Boyd scored five. Elza Clift and Alana Mader scored four. Keira Fawson scored three. Jenna Fager scored two.
