The Iola High School girls basketball team welcomed Burlington on homecoming.

The Wildcats however, rained on the Mustangs parade, defeating Iola 52-34.

The game started rough for both sides.

Burlington took advantage of Iola turnovers and converted them into points. The Mustangs did just enough to keep the Wildcats close.

Iola’s Jenna Curry scored five points early keeping the Mustangs at 20-15 at the break.

The second half is when things started to go south for Iola. The Wildcats opened a 16-point lead.

Iola’s Aysha Houk got hot and scored eight points in the second half, but Iola’s turnover issues continued to hamper the Mustangs.

Free throw shooting also hurt. Iola went to the line 13 times, but only made five, with Maci Miller going 3-4 from the line.

Burlington’s defense handled Iola down the stretch to hold on to the win.

“I feel like tonight was the most aggressive the girls have played all year,” said Iola head coach Kelsey Johnson. “Turnovers are what it comes down to. We played really hard and really aggressively but we turned the ball over too many times.”

Houk scored 10 to lead the way. Miller and Jenna Curry both scored seven. Reese Curry had six.

Iola’s junior varsity won 20-19. Alana Mader led the way with six points. Tatum Boyd and Resse Curry both had five. Jackie Fager and Hallie McDermeit each had two.

Iola, 2-12, heads to Wellsville Monday.
