Iola High’s girls tipped off the War on 54 Midseason Tournament in rough fashion Tuesday.

The seventh-seeded Mustang squad fell behind No. 2 seed Cherryvale early and never recovered in a 62-19 loss.

The Chargers led 15-8 after one quarter before embarking on a 19-0 second-quarter run to lead 34-8 at the break.

Iola’s Keira Fawson and Reese Curry shared high-scoring honors for the Mustangs. Curry scored six of her eight points in the first quarter. Fawson scored all eight of her points after intermission.

Jailee Reister scored 18 and Kelsi Lantz 15 for the Chargers, who connected on seven 3-pointers in the contest.

Iola will take on Crest, a 48-22 loser to Humboldt, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the IHS gymnasium. Cherryvale advances to take on Humboldt at the same time in the Iola Elementary School gym.
