Iola freshman Josie Plumlee dribbles the ball down the court in the Fillies' home loss to Chanute on Thursday.

Both Iola freshman teams came up short Thursday night when the girls hosted Chanute and the boys hosted Parsons.

The Fillies fell 34-22 while the young Mustangs lost 38-19.

The Iola girls trailed by three coming out of the first but a 9-4 second quarter set Chanute up with a nine-point halftime lead.

Chanute expanded that lead by a point in the third quarter and outscored the Fillies 2-1 in the fourth to secure the 12-point win.

Josie Plumlee and Maci Miller each had seven points while Chloe Sell had six and Elanie Sturgeon had two.

The Freshman Fillies rebounded a day later with a 25-23 win.

Plumlee had seven, Jenna Curry had six, Miller had five, Sell had four and Sturgeon had three.

THE FRESHMAN boys had a similar problem scoring the basketball in their loss.

Despite scoring 19 points, Iola only made four baskets the entire game with the other 11 points coming from the free throw line.

After a 7-1 first quarter for Parsons, Iola came back with an eight-point second quarter only to be countered by 11 points by the Vikings.

Parsons added on 12 in the third quarter to just six for Iola, expanding their lead to 15 points. Iola scored just four points in the final quarter while Parsons scored eight to close out the 19-point loss.

Drake Sellman had six followed by four for Sam Fager, three for Brett Morrison and two for Karson Sigg, Ryker Curry, and Tyler Boeken.

The Mustangs and Fillies head into tournament week next week at the Wilson County Classic in Neodesha.
