Iola comes up short

Iola's Mustangs had several key contributions from both veterans and underclassmen Tuesday, but those weren't enough in a pair of losses on the volleyball court. Iola fell in two sets to Wellsville and in three sets to host Santa Fe Trail.

CARBONDALE — Iola High’s volleyball team had a pair of tough matches on their trip north Tuesday.

The Mustangs dropped a 25-22 and 25-21 decision to Wellsville. Iola finished the night with a three-set loss to host Santa Fe Trail, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-10.

Iola’s young guns did much of the damage.

In the Wellsville match, sophomore Jackie Fager led with five kills, followed by freshman Reese Curry with four.

Senior Ally Ellis led with 2.5 blocks, while senior Chloe Sell had 18 digs. Freshman Kaysin Crusinbery led with 17 assists.

Sell had three aces and 16 digs in the match with the Chargers.

Sophomore Rio Lohman and Reese Curry had five and four kills, respectively, to lead IHS. Ellis had three blocks.

Iola continues its regular season-ending road swing with matches Tuesday at Burlington. A tournament in Anderson County follows on Oct. 16 before the Mustangs return to Garnett three days later to wrap up the regular season.
