Iola boys, Humboldt girls win at Caney

The Iola High School boys came in first in Tuesday’s Caney Valley Invitational cross country meet while the Humboldt High girls secured first in their meet.

CANEY VALLEY — The Iola High School boys came in first in Tuesday’s Caney Valley Invitational cross country meet while the Humboldt High girls secured first in their meet.

The meet was unique in that the distances were substantially shorter; 1.5 miles for the high-schoolers and 1-mile races for the middle-schoolers.

The Mustangs boys secured the top three places for the 1.5-mile race. Jesse Taylor took first, Cole Moyer, second place, and Kaster Trabuc, third place.

In the overall team standings, Iola took home first place, followed by Humboldt in second place and Caney Valley to round out the top three.  

For Taylor, it was his second first-place finish in a row, with an impressive time of 8:22. Moyer kept on Taylor’s heels the entire race, finishing with a time of 8:46. Trabuc’s time was 8:55 for third. 

The next IHS runner to place was Travis Wanker who came in seventh with a time of 9:37 followed by teammate Brennan Coffield who marked a time of 9:56 for an eighth-place finish. The final two varsity runners were Alejandro Escalante who came in 13th with a time of 10:31 and Jayden Silvey coming in 19th with a time of 19:45. 

“All of these Mustangs continue to impress me with their ability to work hard and come out and compete to the best of their abilities,” said Iola head coach Brittany Daugharthy. “What a fun and quick night of racing for the high school athletes.”

Humboldt High School 

The Cubs finished in first place overall on the girls side and second place overall on the boys side. 

The Lady Cubs runners took the top three spots. McKenna Jones came in first with a time of 10:30, Anna Heisler was second place at 11:12 and Carsyn Haviland finished third with a time of 11:35. 

The final four Humboldt girls runners included Tori Melendez’ sixth-place finish with a time of 12:04, Danica Modlin coming in at ninth place with a 12:44 time, Sophia Barlow placing 12th with a time of 12:54 and Lulu Melendez with a time of 13:25 for 15th place. 

“The course was set up great. We are already looking forward to running this meet next year,” said Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson. 

The top Humboldt boys were Peyton Wallace who came in fourth place with a time of 9:11. Brigg Shannon in ninth place, 10:02 and Landon Bauer came in third with a time of 10:16. 

Caden Vink came in 12th place,10:27, Gavin Jaro, 15th place, 10:41 and Maxtyn Mueller, 18th place, 11:30 and Layne Ellison, 23rd place with a time of 14:30.
