CHANUTE — The Iola High boys never found a rhythm Friday night against Chanute, falling 62-36.
Chanute went on a big run early thanks to a plethora of Iola turnovers.
Iola turned the ball over 26 times, and struggled from the field.
On the positive side, the Mustangs pulled in 41 rebounds. Both Cooper Riley and Tyler Boeken each had double-digit rebound nights. Boekenn came within a point of a double-double. His nine points led the Mustangs.
Chanute dominated from tip to buzzer and led 32-16 at the half.
Iola sent Chanute shooters to the free throw line 25 times and the Blue Comets made 13 of those, many coming on the back end of a bucket to become three-point plays.
“We had 41 rebounds. Riley and Tyler combined for 27 and they were physical. We did some good things offensively against the way Chanute attacked the bucket,” said Iola head coach Luke Bycroft. “But with 26 turnovers, none of the rest of that matters.
“We played hard and scrapped, but unless you shoot exceptionally — which we don’t — you can’t get away with 20-turnover games.”
Landon Weide and Cortland Carson both had seven points for Iola.
The junior varsity lost 58-33. Carson led with 13. Gage Skahan had 12. Cody Wille had six. Casey Rowe had five points. Jake Skahan and Ashton Hesse both had three. Japheth Rutoh had two. Ben Kerr and Mac Leonard both had one.
Iola is back in action Tuesday against Santa Fe Trail.
