Iola boys defeat Prairie View

The Iola boys won a game at Prairie View the way they prefer to play games: fast and physical. It was never really a game as the Mustangs began their Tuesday night by going on a 16-0 run in the opening minutes.

LA CYGNE — The Iola High boys got back to their own style of play in a 67-24 victory against Prairie View on Tuesday. The boys had their highest scoring game of the season with two finishing in double digits and nine Mustangs scoring points.

The Mustang girls (4-13) didn’t fare as well in a 56-24 loss against the powerful Buffalos.

It was never really a close game.

The Mustangs (7-9) sprinted out to a 16-0 lead through the opening six minutes behind Eli Adams’ eight points. Prairie View scored its first basket with under two minutes left in the first quarter on a Justin Fleer layup.

The Buffaloes then went on a 6-1 mini-run but Iola still led by double digits, 17-6, to wrap up the quarter. Iola’s Mac Leonard also chipped in five points on a three and a layup.

The Mustangs then went on an 8-2 scoring run to open the second quarter led by Grady Dougherthy’s three and Leonard’s three points. Cortland Carson stretched the Iola advantage to 33-9 on a three with a couple minutes left in the first half.

Iola led Prairie View at halftime, 37-11.

The Mustangs kept up their momentum to begin the second half, going on a 10-4 run capped by Adams’ layup with five minutes left in the third to take a 47-15 lead. Prairie View then called a timeout in an effort to cool the Mustangs’ hot hands, but it was to no avail.

At one point in the third, Iola had a 39-point advantage following a Landon Weide layup. Leonard led in the third with seven points. Iola led Prairie View 61-22 to cap the quarter.

Both teams relaxed in the fourth, combining to score eight points, led by Ben Kerr’s six points for the Mustangs. Iola secured the blowout 67-24 victory.

Leonard led Iola’s scoring attack with 18 points, led by Adams’ 14 points and Lucas Maier’s eight points. Leonard knocked down a trio of three’s.
