After wrapping up a second consecutive SEK Soccer League championship in the 14-and-under division, Iola Blue and Gold competed in the Leawood Soccer Fest, May 19-20.
Iola landed in the pool with NSA United of Kansas City, Mo. Blue and Gold went 2-1 in pool play.
“The only game we lost was to the team that went on and won it all. It’s too bad we weren’t in another pool,” said Brek Ulrich, Iola coach.
“We moved from the No. 8 seed to a No. 3 seed so we’ve seen improvement. I’m proud of the way our kids have played all season.”
Iola Blue and Gold finished 7-2-1 for the spring season. It was 5-1-1 in SEK league play.
At Leawood, Blue and Gold beat Overland Park Real Madrid 4-0. Scoring goals for Iola were Mason Snavely, Jeremy Waldman, Devon Herfurth and Colby Works.
Braden Plumlee was credited with an assist on a goal. In goal, Mason Key had 10 saves.
Iola dropped a tough 2-1 decision to NSA United in pool play. Herfurth had the lone goal for Iola.
Key made 17 saves on 19 shots on goal as Iola’s goalkeeper. Iola trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Iola Blue and Gold ended the season on a good note. It beat Sporting DSE of DeSoto 5-0 on the second day of competition. Iola led 2-0 at halftime.
Herfurth had the hat-trick — three goals — for Iola. Zane Beasley and Bret Plumlee each had a goal.
Beasley also had an assist on a goal. Braden Plumlee was credited with two assists. Key made 17 saves.
Other members of the team are: Ethan Taverez, Collin Bedell, Kendall Jay, Nolan Jones, Blaze Hobbs, Mat Karr, Zach St. Clair, Isiah Shaughnessy, Jack Esyter and Ryan Eyster. Brian Plumlee is the other coach for the team.
