CHANUTE — Iola Middle School’s Tayton Driskel has another record under his belt.
The Pony seventh-grader ran a school record 56.84 seconds to win the 400-meter dash Tuesday at the Royster Rocket Invitational.
Driskel’s time bettered Luke Snavely’s seventh-grade mark of 57.1 seconds from 2002, IMS track coach Terry Lower said.
This is the second record Driskel has accumulated in as many weeks. He set an IMS Invitational record the week prior in the long jump of 17 feet, 8 inches. Hunter Pankey of Burlington held the old mark of 17’2”.
Driskel narrowly missed winning gold a third time. His long jump mark of 16’11” tied for the best of the day among seventh-graders, but he was relegated to second because of a tie-breaker.
Elsewhere, Iola’s Ethan Holloway was a two-time winner among eighth-grade boys in the shot put and the high jump. Jayden Jackson won the seventh-grade girls discus.
The Pony seventh-grade boys took second in Tuesday’s meet with 110 points, behind host Royster’s 148.
The eighth-grade boys for Iola finished in seventh with 32 points. Parsons won the team title with 127.
On the girls’ side, Iola’s seventh-graders took sixth with 53 points behind meet champion Parsons’ 125. The Pony eighth-grade girls took fifth with 40 points. Pittsburg won the team title with 133.
