Iola and Humboldt wrestling teams braved the unfavorable weather Saturday morning to compete in Erie’s 25th Wrestling Invitational.

The weather forced nine of the 23 participating teams to back out due to road conditions, leaving just 14 to compete.

The Mustangs placed fourth overall with 83 team points while Humboldt placed fifth with 77 team points.

Freshman Trent Jones, 145-pounds, placed second overall with 21 team points.

Jones opened things up with a 1:37 pin of Fredonia’s RJ Edwards and followed that with a major decision 10-1 win over Eureka’s Brock Zimmerman.

In the semifinal, Jones beat Chase County’s Cory Owen by a 3-2 decision before losing to Fredonia’s Matt Weilert in the championship match by pin in 3:46.

Freshman TJ Taylor placed third and scored 12 team points.

Taylor got a round one bye before falling in the 106-pound semifinal to Caney Valley’s Jake Stanton by an 8-2 decision.

In the third round, Taylor bounced Herrington’s Ridley Swader with a 50-second pin before getting a 2-0 decision win over Erie’s Drayton Kennedy in the third-place match.

Freshman Adam Atwell, 138 pounds, placed third and scored 18 team points.

Atwell won by fall over Eureka’s Ethan Dennis in 1:31 before falling to Remington’s Javier Martinex in the semifinal in 47 seconds.

Atwell closed things out with two pins, topping St. Marys’ Austin Marshall and Dennis in 2:23 and 1:29 to finish third.

Senior Elijah Luedke, 170 pounds, finished third and scored 14 team points.

Luedke opened with a bye before falling to Fredonia’s Buddy Claibourn by a 3:52 pin.

Luedke bounced back with pins of Field Kindley’s Jaden Erne (52 seconds) and Eureka’s Wyatt Ruest (32 seconds) to grab the bronze.
