Iola AA wins Burlington tourney

BURLINGTON — They left no doubt. Iola American Legion’s AA Indians outscored their opponents 36-3 in the course of four games over the weekend.

They closed the Burlington tournament Sunday evening the same way they opened it Saturday morning — with a victory over Perry Regulators. The AA Indians powered past Perry 12-2 in the championship game Sunday.

Jerrik Sigg scattered seven hits over six innings. After giving up two runs in the first inning on two hits and an error, Sigg and the Indians shut down the Regulators.

Sigg struck out nine batters. The Iola defense turned a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth.

Braden Larson hit two singles and a triple while Sigg and Devon Conner each had a single and a double. Jarred Latta hit two singles.

Drew Walden had a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the third. Corey Taylor hit a two-run home run in the sixth. Levi Ashmore doubled. Mason Coons and Kris Collins each had a base hit.

“The kids played pretty good baseball throughout the tournament. We hit the ball well and pitched well,” said Mike Taylor, head coach.

Walden was the winning pitcher in Sunday’s first game. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five. Iola’s defense turned two double plays in a 13-1 win over Burlington.

Clint Heffern and Larson led the Iola offense with two singles each. Ashmore and Collins had a double apiece and Conner tripled. Sigg, Coons and Latta each had a single.

In Saturday’s opener, Latta recorded 12 strikeouts and limited Perry to one hit. He walked one in a 4-0 win over the Regulators.

Iola AA held a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning. Heffern and Sigg had back-to-back singles then Walden doubled in a run. Taylor hit a two-run double to push Iola’s lead to 4-0.

Sigg and Taylor each had a single and a double. Heffern and Larson had a single each and Walden hit a double.

Iola’s defense turned two double plays behind the pitching of Coons in Saturday’s 7-0 win over Chanute. Coons allowed three hits, walked six and struck out three.

Iola scored four runs in the first inning on four hits and a Chanute error.

Latta connected for a single and a triple and Ashmore had a double and a triple. Sigg tripled and Walden doubled. Hitting a single each were Heffern, Coons, Larson and Collins.
