Iola AA splits home tournament 

The Iola AA Indians hosted a couple of games in Humboldt on Saturday and took an even split. The Kansas Curve took the lead for good in the seventh inning of game one before Logan Page pitched well enough to get the win in game two.

HUMBOLDT — The Iola AA Indians split a home tournament in Humboldt Saturday. 

Iola (7-2) came up short to Kansas Curve in the first game, 4-2, before taking down Leavenworth with some strong pitching in game two, 2-1. Trey Sommer and Logan Page combined to throw a five-hit and one-run gem. 

Game one — Iola v. Kansas Curve, 4-2 loss

The Indians dropped their matchup with the Kansas Curve in the last inning when the Curve scored three runs to win, 4-2. Trevor Church took the uncharacteristic loss after working six innings. Iola’s lineup came up with only two runs on eight hits. 

Rogan Weir began the scoring in the first inning by grounding out to first to bring home a run for the 1-0 lead. Two at bats later, Church flew out to center field which plated the Indians’ second run for the 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth the Curve began to mount their comeback when Jake Williams singled to left to bring the score to 2-1.

The Curve’s Mark Hoffman singled to right to knot the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh. 

The Curve’s Jace Campbell then singled to shortstop for the 3-2 lead before Jackson Warren grounded into a double play which scored a run and made it 4-2. 

Iola couldn’t muster any runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 4-2 loss.

TJ Taylor had a team-high two hits for Iola while Weir drove in one run. 

Game two — Iola v. Leavenworth, 2-1 win

Logan Page picked up the win for Iola, throwing the final five innings and not allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts. Trey Sommer began the game on the mound and was solid as well, allowing only one run on two hits through two frames. 

Leavenworth took the lead first in the top of the first when Landon Cory singled to left field to plate a run and make it 1-0. 

Iola’s Jack White grounded out to second base to plate a run and knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. 

The Indians’ winning run was delivered in the bottom of the fifth when White grounded out to shortstop to bring home Henry White for the 2-1 lead, and the winning score.
