Iola AA Indians split opening pair

Iola American Legion Post 15’s AA Indians opened the 2011 season at home Wednesday. They split a doubleheader with Osawatomie.
Visiting Osawatomie built a 3-0 lead through three innings of the first game and posted a 3-1 win. Iola produced its run in the sixth.
The Indian evened up their season mark (1-1) beating Osawatomie 10-0 in five innings in the second game. Jerrik Sigg and Ryan Latta combined on the mound for the win.
Sigg pitched three innings, allowing two hits, walking three and hitting one batter. He struck out four batters. R. Latta worked two hitless innings and struck out four.
The Indians scored single runs in the first and second innings. They pushed across four runs, three on a bases loaded double by Drew Walden, in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Clint Heffern had two doubles for Iola. Walden and Austin Knoblock each had a double. Levi Ashmore, R. Latta, Kris Collins and Mason Coons each had a single.
In the opening game, Ashmore and R. Latta had the two base hits for Iola. Ethan Ericson took the pitching loss, going three innings and giving up three runs on one hit and five walks. He struck out seven.
Ryan Latta pitched two innings and walked one and struck out one batter. Dalton Smith and Ashmore each worked an inning. Smith gave up one hit and struck out one while Ashmore allowed two hits and struck out a batter.
The AA Indians play in a tournament at Ottawa this weekend.
The team is coached by head coach Mike Taylor, Sherman Ashmore and John Sigg.
