Iola A wins big

BURLINGTON — Iola American Legion’s A Indians opened the 2012 summer season winning a doubleheader on the road.

The A Indians clobbered host Burlington 13-9 and 17-1 Saturday evening.

In the opener, the Indians pushed out to a 8-1 lead but got into trouble in the fourth inning. Burlington scored eight runs to go up 9-8.

Iola tied the game with a run in the fifth. It broke the tie with a four-run seventh.

Iola used four pitchers to get the victory. Aaron Barclay started followed by Thealvin Minor, Drew Faulhaber and Trent Latta. They allowed six hits and issued 10 walks.

Latta and Cole Morrison each hit a single and a triple in the game. Morrison drove in three runs. Faulhaber doubled and Barclay singled.

Tied at 1-1, the Indians scored seven runs in the second inning of the nightcap. They added three more in the third and finished with a six-run outburst in the fourth.

Grayson Pearish went the full four innings in the run-ruled contest. Pearish limited Burlington to one hit, walked two and hit a batter. He struck out eight.

Latta and Caleb Vanatta had a single  and a double respectively for Iola. Derrick Weir and Trey Wilson each hit two singles. Pearish and Barclay each doubled. Faulhaber and Morrison each had a base hit.

The A Indians host Eureka at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Park.
