Iola American Legion Post 15’s Single A Indians held on to win the first of two games at home Wednesday. They lost the second contest — a wooden bat affair.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Aaron Barclay took over on the mound for the A Indians. Three more runs were scored but visiting Linn County came up short. Iola won the game 13-11.
Barclay picked up the save, allowing just one run on one hit. The other two runs were charged to Drew Faulhaber, who pitched an inning and allowed four runs on one hit and four walks.
The winning pitcher for Iola was starter Trent Latta. Latta worked five innings, giving up six runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out six.
After Linn County scored three runs in the first inning, Iola answered with a five-run second. The Indians added six runs in the fourth and were up 13-6 after six innings.
Faulhaber hit two singles. Tyler Clubine and Bryce Misenhelter each had a double. Latta and Derrick Weir had a single each.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the teams broke out the wooden bats instead of using the aluminum ones. Iola had just two hits in an 11-1 loss in five innings.
Linn County was up 4-0 after two innings. It scored seven runs in the fifth.
Iola’s run came in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Heffern reached on an error then with two gone Shea Beasley worked a walk. Garrett Catron had an RBI single.
The other hit for Iola was a single by Weir.
Clubine and Misenhelter each pitched two innings for Iola. Catron and Trey Wilson pitched in the fifth inning.
The Iola A team is 5-3 on the season. It plays in a tournament at Burlington Saturday then returns to Burlington for a doubleheader on Sunday.
Iola plays at home next Wednesday against Humboldt.
