Iola A Indians drub Richmond

PRINCETON — Iola American Legion Post 15’s A Indians used seven pitchers in their doubleheader Wednesday. It’s not that they really had to but just to get the young arms some work.
The Indians rolled to wins of 17-2 and 13-1 over host Richmond.
That put the Iola A team at 3-1 on the season. The A Indians head into this weekend’s  Iola American Legion tournament with a full-head of steam.
Iola A opens the round-robin event at 9 a.m. Saturday against Paola A. The tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Allen County Community College’s field and there is an admission charge.
Wednesday’s opener against Richmond went five innings. Tyler Clubine was the winning pitcher after two innings of work. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two.
Garrett Catron pitched an inning and was charged with two runs on two hits and and a walk. Iola was up 12-2. Jacob Rhoads and Trey Wilson each had an inning of work on the mound.
The Indians pounded out 13 hits. Eric Heffern and Catron each had two singles. Thealvin Minor hit a two-run home run while Derrick Weir tripled and Austin Snyder doubled.
Trent Latta, Aaron Barclay, Clubine, Drew Faulhaber, Shae Beasley and Wilson each had a single.
The second game lasted just four innings. Barclay pitched two scoreless and hitless innings for the win. He walked one and struck out five. Heffern pitched one inning and walked one batter. Bryce Misenhelter gave up one run on one hit and two walks plus struck out two in one inning.
Iola took full advantage of 15 free passes — 11 walks, three hit batters and an error — in the game. The Indians didn’t have as many hits as in the first game.
Misenhelter had two singles. Heffern, Latta and Barclay each had a base hit.
