HUMBOLDT — The Iola AA American Legion Indians swept Burlington 7-3 and 8-5 in a double-header Thursday night at the Humboldt Sports Complex.
Burlington got things started in the second inning on an error that brought in two runs.
From then on the Indians held the game in check.
Eli Smith led the Indians to victory on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs over five innings, striking out three. Noah Ashmore came on in relief for two innings.
The Indians tallied 11 hits. Drake DeLaTorre, TJ Taylor, Casen Barker and Aiden Jones each managed multiple hits for the Indians. DeLaTorre went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Indians in hits.
In the second game, the Indians took the lead late, notching four runs in the third inning. Dillon Bycroft, Cooper Riley, and Trenton Jones all moved runners across home plate with RBIs.
The Indians earned the victory despite allowing Burlington to score three runs in the fourth.
The game was tied at five with the Indians batting in the bottom of the fourth when Barker’s sacrifice fly scored one run.
Bycroft was credited with the victory for the Indians. Bycroft lasted two innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out one and walking zero.
Barker started the game for the Indians. Barker allowed two hits and five runs over three innings, striking out five.
TJ Taylor and Brayden Cole had multiple hits for the Indians. Taylor went 3-for-3. The Indians stole seven bases.
