Indians split with Wellsville

Jerrik Sigg threw a one-hit shutout for the Iola American Legion Indians at home Thursday. The Indians defeated visiting Wellsville 14-0 in four innings.
Sigg issued five walks and struck out five. Iola scored five runs in the first inning and struck for nine runs in the second inning.
Iola lost the second game of the doubleheader, when Wellsville posted a 12-3 victory.
The Indians are 3-1 for the season.
They defeated Girard 12-11 and 12-1 on Tuesday.
In Thursday’s first game, Sigg, Mark Bristol, Corey Taylor and Jarred Latta each had two singles for Iola. Levi Ashmore, Ryan Latta, Clint Heffern and Ethan Ericson each had a single.
Wellsville jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning in the second contest. Wellsville got two more runs in the second, added three in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.
The Indians weren’t able to generate much offense. They scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Bristol had the first hit of the game for Iola. He led off the fourth with a single and scored. The other two hits of the game came in the fifth, when Ashmore doubled and scored on a single by Ryan Latta.
Bristol was the losing pitcher for Iola, He went four innings and allowed 10 runs on three hits, five walks and two hit batters. He struck out four.
Jarred Latta pitched one inning. He gave up two runs on two walks.
Iola hosts Ottawa for two games Tuesday.
