FORT SCOTT — Iola AA American Legion Post 15 secured four more wins this weekend before losing in the final round of the Adam LaRoche Tournament in Fort Scott.
After the first day of pool play on Friday, Iola beat Paola 9-8. A five-run fourth inning helped the Indians break out to the lead. Derrick Weir and Trent Latta each walked. Kason Siemens hit an RBI-single. After Keanen Badders walked, Derek Bycroft came through with a 2-RBI double.
Pool play continued to be good for Iola on Saturday. The day started with a 9-3 victory over Neosho, Mo.
C.J. D’Armond got the win, pitching all five innings. He was a bit wild, giving up seven walks, but only allowed three runs and struck out four.
Hunter Murrow hit two singles, scored a run and had an RBI. Drew Faulhaber hit two singles and had a run scored. Ethan Scheibmeir hit singles, scored a run and had an RBI. Latta hit a solo-homer. Siemens hit two doubles and scored two runs. D’Armond had two singles and two RBIs to help his cause on the mound. Ethan Sigg and Ben Cooper each had a single; Cooper also scored a run.
In the third game of pool play, which concluded on Saturday night, Iola beat Cannons Green, out of Wichita, 12-2 in five innings.
Latta earned the win, pitching all five innings. He impressively fanned 11 of the 18 batters he faced. He gave up two runs, three hits and one walk.
Murrow hit a two-RBI double, a single and scored a run. Cooper hit a single and scored a run. Scheibmeir reached base all four times he came up to the plate. He hit three singles, was walked once and scored four runs. Latta hit two triples, a single, had three RBIs and scored two runs. Weir hit two doubles, had three RBIs and scored a run. Badders had a two-RBI double, single and scored a run.
After going 3-0 overall during pool play, Iola was the No. 1 seed headed into Sunday. They started off the day with a rematch with Paola. Iola won the game 12-11 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With no one out and down 11-10, Badders started the inning off with a single. Murrow then reached on an error, giving Iola two base runners and no outs. But, the next two batters went down in order. Scheibmeir came up with the clutch hit to win the game. Both runners came in to score on a single to win the game.
Iola won the game, but had to burn through three pitchers to do it. Scheibmeir got the start and lasted 1 2/3 innings. He got beat on the mound for nine total runs — eight were earned. He did make up for it with the game-winning hit.
Cooper relieved for 3 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs, six hits and had five strikeouts. Murrow pitched the next two innings, only needing 17 pitches in his shut down innings of relief.
By the time Iola played the Kansas Indians (Fort Scott), it had run out of pitching and lost. On offense, Iola scored nine runs in the game.
Murrow had a single and two runs scored. Latta hit two singles. Weir walked and scored a run. Scheibmeir was walked three times and scored three runs. Siemens hit a double and scored two runs. D’Armond hit a single and had two RBIs. Sigg scored a run. Cooper hit two singles and had three RBIs. Badders had a single.
Iola is now 12-4 on the season. The Indians were scheduled to travel to Burlington today for a doubleheader, but canceled the trip to give the team time to recover. Iola will head to Ottawa for a 6 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. The team then travels to Chanute on Saturday and Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. each day.
